Maxine Waters: Wall Street “Shaking in their Boots”

If there were ever a need to explain the importance of maintaining a Republican majority in the House of Representatives, Rep. Maxine Waters, (D-CA) has given it to us.

At a California Democratic Convention, Waters told her audience:

“…and guess what.  Let me let you in on a secret.  I am the senior most person serving on the Financial Services Committee.  Barney Frank is about to retire and guess who’s shaking in their boots – the too big to fail banks and financial institutions and all of Wall Street, because Maxine Waters is going to be the next Chair of the Financial Services Committee.”[i]

For those who may have forgotten, this is the same Maxine Waters who told an oil company executive that she would be about “…taking over and the government running all of your companies.” [ii]

Community Organizing: Power and Redistribution – Reason #62

Only 105 Days Remaining!

Community Organizing: Power and Redistribution

In a 2001 interview on Chicago’s WBEZ radio, Obama unveiled his belief that economic justice in America can only be achieved through the redistribution of income – a concept not unlike that voiced by Karl Marx many years earlier.  He also appears to have suggested that the way to achieve redistribution was not through the courts, but in the streets – through agitation and community organizing.

“But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth – and more basic issues of political and economic justice in the society – and to that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren court, it wasn’t that radical.

“It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution – at least as it’s been interpreted – and the Warren Court interpreted it in the same way, that generally, the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties.

“It says what the states can’t do to you.  It says what the federal government can’t do to you.  But it doesn’t say what the federal government, or the state government must do on your behalf.

“And that hasn’t shifted – and one of the – I think – tragedies of the civil rights movement, I think, was because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change.  In some ways, we still suffer from that.”[i] (emphasis added)

In little more than a sound-bite, Obama provided us with a very important insight into his view of the Constitution and the role of the Supreme Court in interpreting it.  Here, he seems to be touching on the argument for bigger government (“what…government must do on your behalf”), while chastising the Warren Court for upholding the Constitutional constraints written by the Founding Fathers.  Then, as if echoing these words from Karl Marx – “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”[ii] – he talks about both the redistribution of wealth and the ability of community organizers to put together coalitions capable of producing “redistributive changes.” [iii]

That line produces instant images of ACORN pressuring banks and nonbank lenders to adopt a financial paradigm in which loans could be made to people regardless of their credit worthiness and ability to pay.[iv]  Indeed, history strongly suggests that Obama’s formula here, would result in coercive, disruptive, “in your face” practices.  Was this his intention as an expert Organizer?

Treasury Employees Owe $8 million in Taxes – Checking Your Return – Reason #61

Treasury Employees Owe $8 million in Taxes – Checking Your Return

According to the Los Angeles Times, in 2010, federal employees in total, owed approximately one billion dollars in back taxes, with $831,000 owed exclusively by individuals working In the White House.  If that’s not sufficiently troubling, nearly eight million dollars was owed by just over 1,200 Treasury employees[i] – you know – Treasury.  This is the Dept. running the Internal Revenue Service!

We keep hearing that nearly 50% of Americans pay no taxes.  We just never thought they were the ones running our government.

Blame on Display/Marxism v. “Income Inequality” – Reasons 59/60

Only 108 Days Remaining!

Obama – Blame on Display

Just five days before leaving office, then President Bush – unifying the nation around a new President – proudly noted in his press conference:

“Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you, the American people. Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose story reflects the enduring promise of our land. This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President-elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.”[i]

Eight days into the new Administration, President Obama’s new Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, told the American people:

“President Obama immediately made clear that the type of ethical transgressions, the blatant conflicts of interest, waste and abuses that we have seen over the last eight years will no longer be tolerated.”[ii]

This would be only an early and small example of President Obama’s seemingly infinite ability to divide America, direct blame, avoid personal responsibility and promote discord.

 Marxism v. “Income Inequality”

Our Founding Fathers believed that we were all “created equal” and endowed by our “Creator with certain unalienable Rights…”  Obama and his cohorts seem to view those words, not as a commitment to equal opportunity, but as a promise of equal outcome.  It is only in that context that we can understand the words of such Obama stalwarts as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who promised:

“Nothing is more important to Congress, than reducing income inequality.”[iii]

The political system to which “income equality” belongs is not one that has ever been found in America.  It is far closer to the one advocated by Karl Marx.  It is nothing less than scary that these words should come from a U.S. Senator.  In America we are guaranteed equal opportunity – not equal outcomes.

Obama and “The Same Rules?” – Reason #57

Only 114 Days Remaining!

“When Everyone Plays by the Same Rules”

How many times have we heard President Obama say:

“I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, when everyone plays by the same rules. These aren’t Democratic values or Republican values. These aren’t 1 percent values or 99 percent values. They’re American values. And we have to reclaim them.”[i]

It is a fitting illustration of this Administration’s hypocrisy to note that as of September, 2010, Obama and his Administration were “reclaiming” these American values as follows:

41 White House Aides owed $831,000 in back taxes

1,971 members of Holder’s Dept. of Justice, owed $14,350,152 in overdue taxes

4,856 members of the Dept. of Homeland Security, owed $37,012,174 to the IRS

In all, federal employees throughout the U.S. owed one billion dollars in back taxes[ii]

Obama rails against so-called “millionaires and billionaires” (he really means everybody making over $250,000 per year) not paying their fair share.  Obama preaches the need for redistributing America’s wealth, in order to give everyone a fair shot.  But, at the end of the day, it appears that Obama and members of his Administration mean to promote American values only with our money – not theirs.

Say “Hi” To 800 New Friends at IRS – Reason #56

Only 115 Days Remaining!

Takes One to Catch One?

Despite repeated warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), from whom Tim Geithner received income from 2001 to 2004, Geithner reportedly failed to pay $34,000 in payroll taxes.  In response to a 2006 IRS audit, Geithner corrected his payroll tax errors for 2003 and 2004, but continued his withholding of proper payment for 2001 and 2002, until after he was vetted as Obama’s nominee for Treasury Secretary.[i]

What would happen to the average middle-class American  failing to pay payroll taxes for four years and then continuing to stiff the IRS for an additional four years?

No need to worry about that.  In Obama’s world, that behavior could put you in charge of the entire Treasury Department, including the IRS.  And, who better to hold other Americans accountable?  Incidentally, Geithner – a poster child for tax issues – plans to increase tax evasion prosecutions in 2012 and to aggressively pursue the collection of back taxes.  According to Geithner:

“A total of $332 million would be devoted to new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) enforcement efforts, including $128.1 million to add nearly 800 new IRS employees to combat… tax evasion and improve compliance with tax laws by businesses and high-income individuals.”

Really!  No hypocrisy here.

Talk and Actions Matching? – Reason #55

Only 116 Days Remaining!

Obama – A New Washington Culture?

In a speech in Green Bay on Sept. 22, 2008, then candidate Obama was quoted as saying:

“We must change Washington.  We must reform our regulations, our politics and our government, but we will not be able to make these changes with the same policies, the same lobbyists or the same Washington culture that allows politicians and special interests to set their own agenda.”[i]

Nice sentiments indeed, for a politician who only a few months later, nominated a Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, who had allegedly made “hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting and speaking fees from health and pharmaceutical interests, some of which would be at the heart of any effort to overhaul the nation’s health care system” [ii] – an HHS Secretary also found to be owing $128,000 in back taxes.

No hypocrisy here.

Racial Code or Race Card – Reason #50

Only 121 Days Remaining!

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Hears Racial Code

Following are the words of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), ardent Obama supporter and a Democrat not afraid to play the race card when it buys ink or air time.  Here, she attacks GOP Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich as a racist.

“Let me say that the code words are, as far as I’m concerned words that generate and signify race.   You recall, Martin, that comments made by someone other than the president when he was a candidate in 2008, caused him to make a significant speech on race to say “Race is a factor in the United States, but I work and will represent all people.” Here we have Newt Gingrich, taking the opposite road, if you will. It’s I will use race to divide.

“I will call the president the food stamp president, obviously not knowing that food stamps are utilized by our soldiers, utilized by Caucasians in a higher percentage than both African-Americans and Latinos. Food stamps are for people in need.  Food stamps are for children.

“But, these code words are dividing us – telling us that a janitor who makes $37,000 a year would be in a better position to give his job up so that the children of the poor in New York, I think he used the example, the school district predominantly Latino and African-American can pick up a broom and work.  So, we know that those children and children from other places as well, should have an opportunity to be an astronaut, mathematician, a scientist – and absolutely, we’re not against work.   These children want work. They’re fighting for summer jobs. But, that is a code word to, if you will, portray poor children and poor school districts that they have seen no one work legitimately; that they don’t have a work ethic and these janitors are overpaid unionized workers who don’t have family and not making $37,000 a year.

“I think Mr. Newt Gingrich should be ashamed of himself and we should not want to win at any cost. Let’s bring the country together. Let’s not destroy Mr. Obama. Let’s talk about helping the American people.”[i]

Of course, there is always more than one way to look at words, actions, and intentions.  The filter used by Congresswoman Jackson Lee is incorrect, an obstacle to lasting solutions and still another useless racial trigger.  She points out that “food stamps are…utilized by Caucasians in a higher percentage than both African-Americans and Latinos…” This is true on its face, but represents a very selective manipulation of statistics – one that serves nobody.  It would be more productive for Jackson Lee to base her words and actions on reality, rather than racial defensiveness.  The general population of the United States, according to the U.S. Census, is broken down in part, as follows:  White non Hispanic, 63.7%; Black, 12.6%; Latino, 16.3%.[ii]  In terms of reliance on Food Stamps however, a 2005 study revealed that among rural recipients, 53% were white non Hispanic and 27% black.  Among urban recipients, 34% were white non Hispanic and 35% black.[iii]  This means two things: First, as a percentage of food stamp recipients, whites comprise the majority of rural recipients and only one percent less than blacks as urban recipients.  In this respect, Jackson Lee is 100% correct.  Unfortunately, this would suggest the need to apportion the bulk of our dedicated financial and other resources at programs that would assist white food stamp recipients in becoming less reliant on government assistance – a very wasteful approach, when the same statistics are properly interpreted.

The second thing these statistics tell us then, is this:  As they relate to their percentage of representation in the overall population, whites are underrepresented as Food Stamp recipients, by nearly 11% (rural), or 30% (urban), while blacks – based on their participation in the overall population – are over represented as food stamp recipients by 214% and 278%, respectively.  Ignoring, or defensively manipulating these statistics for political correctness, or racial defensiveness does not help blacks out of this difficult problem.

Additionally, Rep. Jackson Lee ignores the fact that Gingrich’s own daughter worked as a janitor during her teens – making his comments very unlikely to have been racially motivated.  Nobody wins with this type of rhetoric – a style of choice for Democrats since Obama became President.

Who is Peter Dreier?

Only 125 Days Remaining!

Who is Peter Dreier?

Peter Dreier, as described in Radical-in-Chief,  was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America’s National Executive Committee, a frequent contributor to The Nation, a major influence on Community Organizing, “a key strategist” in the development of ACORN’s bank pressuring campaign, and a proponent of a scenario in which the expansion of state spending takes the public sector and – ultimately the entire country – to the brink of financial collapse.  This forces a call for spending cutbacks which, in turn, mobilizes those receiving government entitlements to protest, even to the point of revolution.[i]   Sound familiar?  We need look only to our experience in Wisconsin to see a living albeit minor example.

Dreier reportedly believes that this entitlement crisis may result in violent revolution and lead the country finally into either Fascism or Socialism.  He advocates the use of community organizers to assure that it is the latter and suggests the importance of having “a left wing grassroots movement already in place” to accomplish this.[ii]  Again, we may have current examples under the Obama Administration – the “Occupy” movement, supported by Obama and the membership of Obama’s Organizing for America: a force of unknown size and strength.  Could this be Obama’s Civilian National Defense Force?

Coincidentally, Dreier believes that corporations should be controlled by Labor Unions and community organizations.  According to author Stanley Kurtz, “a 1980 piece in Social Policy” contains a drawing depicting such an organization – oddly enough – called “U.S. Motors.”[iii]

In spite of all these similarities to current events, if it still seems a distant stretch, it is also of interest to note that Dreier served as an Advisor to Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign.[iv]

Reason #41 – Obama’s Pride in America – a Mixed Message

Only 132 Days Remaining!

Reason #41

Obama Finds Pride in America as Election Nears

During an interview with Barbara Walters, aired on ABC Nightline, on December 23, 2011, President Obama said:

“Here in the United States,  everybody’s always talking about China and how they’re rising.  When you’re in Asia, people are still looking to the United States.  They don’t look to China.  They look to the United States for Leadership, for security, on economics, on culture, on politics – not because they think we’re perfect, but because they realize that we are a unique superpower in the sense that we don’t just think about our self interest.  We also think about what’s good for the world.  And, I wouldn’t want us to trade places with anybody – and I want to communicate that more effectively to the American people.”

In October, 2010, he was not quite so happy with America, when he said of China:

“Right now, China’s building hundreds of thousands of miles of new roads. Over the next 10 years, it plans to build dozens of new airports. Over the next 20, it could build as many as 170 new mass transit systems. Everywhere else, they’re thinking big. They’re creating jobs today, but they’re also playing to win tomorrow.”[i]

In August, 2008, then Senator and Presidential Candidate Obama was quick to show the losing role of America – particularly, as compared with China:

“Think about the amount of money that China has spent on infrastructure. Their ports, their train systems, their airports are vastly the superior to us now…”[ii]

And, as for receiving the world’s admiration for not just thinking about our self interest, but also thinking about “what’s good for the world,” could Obama have been more supportive than in his 1990 statement that we were “mean-spirited” and ungenerous,[iii] or, in his January, 2009 interview on Al Arabiya TV, when he told their audience that “…all too often, the United States starts by dictating…”[iv] or, in his April 2009 speech at  the Summit of the Americas, where he confessed, “…we have at times been disengaged, and at times we sought to dictate our terms.”

The contrast of his current statement to his consistent position on these issues is indeed something to behold.  Perhaps, it has something to do with the proximity of the 2012 Presidential elections.

In true keeping with his “No Drama Obama” persona, time and time again, the President  illustrates his rugged ability to stare his own statements in the face and deny them with impunity.  Still, for those who watch and listen, he is indeed transparent.
