Business as Usual at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

President Obama was back on the golf course Saturday – obviously, deeply concerned about the people still suffering in New York and New Jersey.  That bit of sarcasm would seem harsh and out of touch to most Democrats, but given Obama’s handling of Benghazi and the deaths of four Americans, it seems a more than fair appraisal of what moves the needle on this  president’s “urgency meter.”

Still, President Obama has ticked off a few of his “To Do’s” since last Tuesday’s election.  He admitted, for example, that one of our unmanned, unarmed drones had been attacked by Iranian jets on November 1st.  For those that pay attention to such trivia, that would be five days before the election.  One can only wonder why it took so long for that news to find daylight.  In still another in the long line of fortuitous coincidences that have guided Obama’s career, General David Petraeus, Director of the CIA, has stepped down.  Conveniently, his resignation, based on an alleged extramarital affair, came days after (with no hint before) the election and days before hearings on Benghazi.  The affair was reportedly part of an FBI investigation  – Strangely, and apparently in violation of established protocol, not reported prior to the election, to members of the congressional intelligence committees.

As they say, “Timing is Everything.”

Then there was Obama’s speech on Friday, in which he noted in part, that

“…the American people voted for action, not politics as usual.  You elected us to focus on your jobs – not ours.  And in that spirit, I’ve invited leaders of both parties to the White House next week so we can start to build consensus around the challenges that we can only solve together – and I also intend to bring in business and labor and civic leaders from all across the country, here, to Washington to get their ideas and input as well.  You know, at a time when our economy is still recovering from a great recession, our top priority has to be jobs and growth.  That’s the focus of the plan that I talked about during the campaign.  It’s a plan that rewards small businesses and manufacturers that create jobs here – not overseas.  It’s a plan to give people the chance to get the education and training that businesses are looking for right now.  It’s a plan to make sure that this country is a global leader in research, in technology and clean energy, which will attract new companies and high wage jobs to America.  It’s a plan to put folks back to work – including our veterans – rebuilding our roads and our bridges and other infrastructure.  And, it’s a plan to reduce our deficit in a balanced and responsible way.  Our work is made that much more urgent because at the end of this year we face a series of  deadlines that requires us to make major decisions about how to pay our deficit down – decisions that will have a major impact on the economy and on the middle class, both now and in the future.  Last year, I worked with Democrats and Republicans to cut a trillion dollars worth of spending that we just couldn’t afford.  I intend to work with both parties to do more and that includes making reforms that will bring down the cost of health care, so we can strengthen programs like Medicaid and Medicare for the long haul.  But, as I’ve said before, we just can’t cut our way to prosperity.  If we’re serious about reducing the deficit, we have to combine spending cuts with revenue…and that means asking the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more in taxes.  That’s how we did it in the 1990’s when Bill Clinton was president.  That’s how we can reduce the deficit while still making the investments we need to build a strong middle class and a strong economy.  That’s the only way we can still afford to train our workers, or help our kids pay for college, or make sure that good jobs, or clean energy, or high tech manufacturing don’t end up in countries like China.  Now, already I’ve put forth a detailed plan that allows us to make these investments while reducing our deficit by four trillion dollars over the next decade.  I want to be clear.  I’m not wedded to every detail of my plan.  I’m open to compromise.  I’m open to new ideas.  I’m committed to solving our fiscal challenge.  BUT, I refuse to accept any approach that isn’t balanced…”

I was once taught by a Psychologist friend that the word “BUT” cancels everything said up to that point.  You think?

I often find myself asking if it has occurred to others that this entire political conversation is a game that insults the intelligence of Americans.  On the one hand, we have conservatives saying that raising taxes on those making over $250,000 is raising taxes on small business and on investors who make small business possible.  I entirely agree with this premise insofar as those being targeted for tax increases are small business owners, or are investing in small businesses.  President Obama, on the other hand, seems to completely discount the argument and wants to increase taxes on everyone over that threshold income.  And as he does, he still claims that he will increase the number of jobs and attract new businesses.  This is counterintuitive and, I believe, totally false.  Additionally, it has been shown on several occasions that even if we taxed all of this target group at 100%, it would provide only enough revenue to run the country for a few weeks.  At the same time, it would necessarily eliminate business investment.

What seems to elude Harvard educated politicians, but easily passes the commonsense test, is that if this were a fiscal, rather than an ideological argument, they need only determine who, making more than $250,000 is actually engaged in a small business, who is employing others, and who is investing in the small businesses of others.  Extend the tax cuts for all of them and raise taxes, if you must, on the rest.  Make sense?

The truth, as any breathing person should realize by now, is that tax increases will make no positive difference on the deficit, or debt.  Whatever additional funds are brought into the treasury will be “invested” by Obama before they even arrive.  They will not be used to reduce the deficit, or the debt.  We should not forget that this president hasn’t even been able to pass a budget in his first term.  By definition, this means that there is no plan, because plans are funded and executed through the budget process.  He has increased the National Debt by more than five trillion dollars in less than four years – the most outrageous increase in the history of America.

If Barack Obama was a financial consultant, rather than president  – If he had the same record in his business finances as he has had in Washington – If the financial rating of his company had fallen as that of America has – If you knew he had been operating his company for the past four years, without so much as a budget – if his company was deeply in debt and still borrowing to stay afloat – And if you were searching for someone to handle your hard earned retirement savings – would you put your entire financial future in his hands?

We have.

Lies – Arrogance and the “Obama Way”

Made your Decision???

Now in Paperback

Remember when the U.S. Embassy was considered American soil – wherever it might be.  Remember when the American Embassy was viewed by the world as a place of refuge; a symbol of the greatest country on Earth – a place where the poorest, most helpless person on Earth could be kept safe from the harshest most powerful dictator, if he could just make his way through the gate? Remember when it meant something when someone burned the American flag?  Remember when killing a U.S. Ambassador would have been tantamount to issuing a death warrant on yourself?  Those fading memories  have all been put away quietly by this president, in some obscure corner of the White House, wrapped with apologies, lest anyone suspect us of flashing our power.  Today, under the Obama administration, we have an alternate reality that shifts and changes by the moment – an illusion of power where he orders surgical killings, but is constantly on the search for something that might warrant another apology.  While “Friendly” Afghans assassinated our troops, he responded vigorously…with an apology for the Koran burnings – Korans being used by prisoners to transmit intelligence.  While our Ambassador to Libya and three of his staff are brutally – sadistically murdered, he looks frantically for a third rate amateurish video that will allow him to step away from the fray and enjoy his comfort zone as an apologist.  Meantime, back at home, he crows as the undisputed campaigner-in-chief, showing us his view of the world – a world where we no longer have an American flag, but an Obama flag.  Unbelievable?  Here it is:

See at:  (http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2012/09/new-obama-flag-looks-eerily-like-bloody-handprints-at-benghazi-consulate/)

Only a Campaign symbol?  Remember when every square inch of our flag was revered?  No longer good enough for the Obama campaign?   In their typical arrogance, they no doubt see the American flag as one more thing they can do better.  Indeed, they have a strange view of reality.

With more than 30 countries literally on fire and brewing troubles in others, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice recently appeared on ABC’s This Week with Jake Tapper.[1]  Responding to a question from Mr. Tapper as to why America had grown less popular across the Middle East despite President Obama’s Muslim outreach, Ms. Rice did what this administration seems to do so consistently.  She argued that the dark moonlit sky above us does not really signify night – and in fact, dark glasses were required to avoid the harsh glare of the sun.  Translated – she spoke like an insane person, living in an alternate reality.   With the trademark arrogance made famous by the Obama administration, Ms. Rice had no doubt that her every word would be accepted and perhaps even cherished.  What did she say?  She responded defensively that we’re not less popular and even challenged Tapper’s basis for making such an observation.[2]

And little wonder say Obama’s admirers…imagine a seasoned journalist coming to such a conclusion solely on the basis of the murder of a U.S. Ambassador and three of his staff, attacks on our embassies, burnings of the American flag, mobs chanting “Obama, Obama,” we are all Osama, while carrying signs calling for the annihilation of  America and Israel…the recklessness of such an assumption is beyond the pale!!!

Don’t forget the movie.  Ambassador Rice reminded us again that the attacks leading to the murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens and his three staffers was the result of spontaneous riots, where participants just happened to be carrying Rocket Propelled Grenades and launchers…makes sense.  It was an obscure movie that provoked those murders and riots around the world.  The low budget film, released in July seemed to be dormant for two months, as if hidden in a closet.  Then on just a random date – say, September 11th, all Hell broke loose.  In the world of Ambassador Rice and President Obama, that probably makes perfect sense.  And, if so, that’s really frightening.

Sarcasm aside, her response was all too typical of the stream of lies, half-truths and distortions that have come to characterize President Obama and his administration.  Republicans want dirty air and dirty water?[3]  We want to throw grandma over the cliff?  A few days ago, the President said that he has learned that “If you want to be president you’ve got to work for everybody, not just for some.” [4] Unless you’ve been out of the country for the last four years, with no access to television, radio and print material, that’s got to pull a laugh.  When he still held a majority in both houses of Congress, he was already berating Republicans for driving the “car” (of state) into the ditch and telling them they could come along, but would have to “sit in back”[5]…an outstanding way, no doubt often used by Obama to build consensus.  Was this an example of  working for both Republicans and Democrats?

How many times in his first several months as President did he remind us that “Elections have consequences” and “I won.”[6]  Was he binding the wounds – bringing people together – working for everybody?

Then there was his instruction to Latinos to “Punish your enemies,” and his warning that if you are Hispanic and taking your child out for ice cream,   “you’re going to be harassed.”  Was he working for everybody?

He wondered, in the pages of  Dreams from my Father:

“whether a black politics that suppressed rage toward whites generally, or one that failed to elevate race loyalty above all else, was a politics inadequate to the task.”[7]

Has he then been working for black Americans, or white Americans?  Or, was this still another example of Obama working for everybody?

It all seems to beg a question.  Another video was just uncovered, in which Obama again identifies himself as being in favor of redistribution.  He has said that on more than one occasion.  Remember “Joe the Plumber?”

Now, does he represent the people to whom hard earned, redistributed money will flow – or, does he represent those who have worked for what they have and from whom it will be “redistributed” to others?

Well, I guess he’s “working for everybody.”  That’s what he said.  Remember, “Elections have consequences.”  He did win.

We did not.  But, we have another chance in November.

Democratic National Circus!! Part 4

Only 57 Days Remaining!

Who Says America is in Decline?

Transport yourself back to the historic moment.

It is Closing night at the Democratic National Circus.

Under the “Big Top,”  the two central figures of the Circus:  Joseph Biden, Vice President of the United States and Barack – “I am the President” – Obama.

Biden is leading the charge – preparing the way for his boss.  He leans forward on the podium, eyes of steel, jaw tight, finger jabbing in the air as if pounding the chest of an unseen enemy.

Then it comes.  Like a superhero lecturing a bully he has just beaten, he lets the hard words flow:

“Folks, there is one more thing — one more thing that our Republican opponents are just dead wrong about.  America is not in decline.  America is not in decline.  I’ve got news for Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan.  Gentlemen, never, ever –it never makes sense, it’s never been a good bet to bet against the American people. Never.”[1]

So powerful were these words that none other than Obama himself decided to borrow them in a campaign speech given during his two day Florida bus tour:

“When our opponents say this nation is in decline, they are dead wrong – this is America,”[2]

Obama was reportedly responding to a remark allegedly made by Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan, that our growing federal debt puts our country in decline.

Obama’s fans are beside themselves with pride.  Here is their president pushing back hard against the idea that America is in decline – Surely, he’ll show them!  Regrettably, while their candidate may be responding strongly to a narrowly focused economic comment by Paul Ryan, it is he, who long ago, began heralding the decline of America and then with a one-two punch, started pushing us in that direction.

First, there was the famous Obama “apology” tour.  Then were the Obama comments about America and about the:

“manic and self absorbed” “mood of the country,” [3]

It was Obama himself, who reminded us:

 “…we went off course…”[4]

“…great country that had gotten a little soft…”[5]

It was Obama who scolded America, noting that:

“Anybody been to Beijing Airport lately? Or driven on high-speed rail in Asia or Europe? What’s changed? Well, we’ve lost our ambition, our imagination, and our willingness to do the things that built the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam and unleashed all the potential in this country.”[6]

And while he said all of these things, he was spending – always spending – until finally, our Credit Rating was gone.  But, even that wasn’t enough.  He was also dividing us – Poor against Rich, Blacks against Whites, immigrants against Republicans, citizens against police.  Was this the same guy who gave the 2004 Keynote Address for John Kerry?

“There’s not a liberal America and a conservative America – there’s the United States of America.  There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America.”

Are you the same man who once called our Country “Mean-Spirited” and ungenerous?  Are you the man who has attacked and apologized for your country as President?

America is a strong, proud and exceptional nation with a history of achievement and generosity.  It is not a line in a campaign speech…Especially yours.

Democratic National Circus! Part Three

Only 58 Days Remaining!

Does Obama Think You’re Stupid?

During the Democratic National Circus, you heard Obama say:

                “I’m no longer just a candidate.  I’m the President.”[1]

That statement says so much about Obama.  How many times since this man was elected President has he reminded us that he is the President, that he is the Commander-in-Chief and that “elections have consequences?”

Collectively, these phrases serve far better, as reminders of his unbridled arrogance and perhaps, if we’re honest, of his insecurity in a role he occupies through mere rhetoric rather than accomplishments of any kind.

To check myself, I searched the White House web-site, finding 43,300 results for “Commander-in-Chief,” only one for “Elections have consequences,” (although it produced 486,000 results on Google), and 30,800 results on White House.gov for the corresponding phrase, “I Won.”  Perhaps that makes up for what now seems a modest 174 results for “I am President.”

The constant repetition of these self-serving, condescending and arrogant reminders of power go well with Valerie Jarrett’s one time statement that:

“He [Obama] is prepared to really take power and begin to rule Day One.”[2]

Now, having said all these things about the number one person in his life and his assessment of his own power as president, Obama surely must realize that being president is a serious matter.  He has the ability to order young men and women into combat and he now presides over an American economy with a workforce at its lowest point in 31 years – its lowest point in history for men.  As he stood on the podium, accepting the nomination of his Party for president – giving still another in a long line of teleprompter lead speeches – approximately 12.5 million Americans remained unemployed;”[3]  millions more only marginally attached to the workforce, or underemployed.   As he stood on that podium, bragging about 29 straight months of job growth, the new unemployment level was at 8.1%, three tenths of a percent higher than when he took office.  The National Debt was above $16 trillion and salaries for the average middle-class family had dropped by $4,000.  As he has incessantly campaigned, calling jobs his number one priority, he has failed to meet with his Jobs Council even once since January, 2012.  Joe Biden ridiculed a Mitt Romney suggestion for a Territorial Tax, apparently not even realizing that the president’s own Jobs Council had made the same unheeded recommendation.

So what did this very serious, able and thoughtful President say to the American people at the Democratic National Circus???

“Have a surplus?  Try a tax cut.  Deficit too high?  Try another.  Feel a cold coming on?  Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call us in the morning.”[4]

Are these the words of a man holding one of the most powerful offices in the world?  Do they make you a better informed citizen?  Do they factually explain our problems in an adult fashion and offer solutions for your evaluation?  Or are these the words of someone who views his followers as morons eager to laugh at his jokes while their families starve?  You decide.

Decide quick – only 58 days to decide the future of America.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Community Organizing: Power and Redistribution – Reason #62

Only 105 Days Remaining!

Community Organizing: Power and Redistribution

In a 2001 interview on Chicago’s WBEZ radio, Obama unveiled his belief that economic justice in America can only be achieved through the redistribution of income – a concept not unlike that voiced by Karl Marx many years earlier.  He also appears to have suggested that the way to achieve redistribution was not through the courts, but in the streets – through agitation and community organizing.

“But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth – and more basic issues of political and economic justice in the society – and to that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren court, it wasn’t that radical.

“It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution – at least as it’s been interpreted – and the Warren Court interpreted it in the same way, that generally, the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties.

“It says what the states can’t do to you.  It says what the federal government can’t do to you.  But it doesn’t say what the federal government, or the state government must do on your behalf.

“And that hasn’t shifted – and one of the – I think – tragedies of the civil rights movement, I think, was because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change.  In some ways, we still suffer from that.”[i] (emphasis added)

In little more than a sound-bite, Obama provided us with a very important insight into his view of the Constitution and the role of the Supreme Court in interpreting it.  Here, he seems to be touching on the argument for bigger government (“what…government must do on your behalf”), while chastising the Warren Court for upholding the Constitutional constraints written by the Founding Fathers.  Then, as if echoing these words from Karl Marx – “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”[ii] – he talks about both the redistribution of wealth and the ability of community organizers to put together coalitions capable of producing “redistributive changes.” [iii]

That line produces instant images of ACORN pressuring banks and nonbank lenders to adopt a financial paradigm in which loans could be made to people regardless of their credit worthiness and ability to pay.[iv]  Indeed, history strongly suggests that Obama’s formula here, would result in coercive, disruptive, “in your face” practices.  Was this his intention as an expert Organizer?

Treasury Employees Owe $8 million in Taxes – Checking Your Return

According to the Los Angeles Times, in 2010, federal employees in total, owed approximately one billion dollars in back taxes, with $831,000 owed exclusively by individuals working In the White House.  If that’s not sufficiently troubling, nearly eight million dollars was owed by just over 1,200 Treasury employees[i] – you know – Treasury.  This is the Dept. running the Internal Revenue Service!

We keep hearing that nearly 50% of Americans pay no taxes.  We just never thought they were the ones running our government.
