Racial Code or Race Card – Reason #50

Only 121 Days Remaining!

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Hears Racial Code

Following are the words of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), ardent Obama supporter and a Democrat not afraid to play the race card when it buys ink or air time.  Here, she attacks GOP Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich as a racist.

“Let me say that the code words are, as far as I’m concerned words that generate and signify race.   You recall, Martin, that comments made by someone other than the president when he was a candidate in 2008, caused him to make a significant speech on race to say “Race is a factor in the United States, but I work and will represent all people.” Here we have Newt Gingrich, taking the opposite road, if you will. It’s I will use race to divide.

“I will call the president the food stamp president, obviously not knowing that food stamps are utilized by our soldiers, utilized by Caucasians in a higher percentage than both African-Americans and Latinos. Food stamps are for people in need.  Food stamps are for children.

“But, these code words are dividing us – telling us that a janitor who makes $37,000 a year would be in a better position to give his job up so that the children of the poor in New York, I think he used the example, the school district predominantly Latino and African-American can pick up a broom and work.  So, we know that those children and children from other places as well, should have an opportunity to be an astronaut, mathematician, a scientist – and absolutely, we’re not against work.   These children want work. They’re fighting for summer jobs. But, that is a code word to, if you will, portray poor children and poor school districts that they have seen no one work legitimately; that they don’t have a work ethic and these janitors are overpaid unionized workers who don’t have family and not making $37,000 a year.

“I think Mr. Newt Gingrich should be ashamed of himself and we should not want to win at any cost. Let’s bring the country together. Let’s not destroy Mr. Obama. Let’s talk about helping the American people.”[i]

Of course, there is always more than one way to look at words, actions, and intentions.  The filter used by Congresswoman Jackson Lee is incorrect, an obstacle to lasting solutions and still another useless racial trigger.  She points out that “food stamps are…utilized by Caucasians in a higher percentage than both African-Americans and Latinos…” This is true on its face, but represents a very selective manipulation of statistics – one that serves nobody.  It would be more productive for Jackson Lee to base her words and actions on reality, rather than racial defensiveness.  The general population of the United States, according to the U.S. Census, is broken down in part, as follows:  White non Hispanic, 63.7%; Black, 12.6%; Latino, 16.3%.[ii]  In terms of reliance on Food Stamps however, a 2005 study revealed that among rural recipients, 53% were white non Hispanic and 27% black.  Among urban recipients, 34% were white non Hispanic and 35% black.[iii]  This means two things: First, as a percentage of food stamp recipients, whites comprise the majority of rural recipients and only one percent less than blacks as urban recipients.  In this respect, Jackson Lee is 100% correct.  Unfortunately, this would suggest the need to apportion the bulk of our dedicated financial and other resources at programs that would assist white food stamp recipients in becoming less reliant on government assistance – a very wasteful approach, when the same statistics are properly interpreted.

The second thing these statistics tell us then, is this:  As they relate to their percentage of representation in the overall population, whites are underrepresented as Food Stamp recipients, by nearly 11% (rural), or 30% (urban), while blacks – based on their participation in the overall population – are over represented as food stamp recipients by 214% and 278%, respectively.  Ignoring, or defensively manipulating these statistics for political correctness, or racial defensiveness does not help blacks out of this difficult problem.

Additionally, Rep. Jackson Lee ignores the fact that Gingrich’s own daughter worked as a janitor during her teens – making his comments very unlikely to have been racially motivated.  Nobody wins with this type of rhetoric – a style of choice for Democrats since Obama became President.

Black Liberation Theology and Obama – What’s Behind the Words?

Only 123 Days Remaining!

Obama and Black Liberation Theology

As with nearly everything else, Obama has been given a free pass on his associations and what they might mean to America – with him in the White House.  He freely admits sitting in the pews of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church for more than 16 years, but somehow claims to have missed the Pastor’s most hateful, America bashing sermons.  While the odds against that claim being true are statistically astronomical, perhaps the even bigger point here, is the influence of James H. Cone on Wright’s day-to-day operation of the church.

Says Brad O’Leary, author of The Audacity of Deceit, “Wright denounces ‘Colored Preachers’ who don’t subscribe to Black Liberation Theology (of James H. Cone) as people who:”

“…hate themselves, who hate black people, who desperately want to be white and who write and say stupid things in public to make ‘Masa’ feel safer.”

Obama – attributing the words to the character “Rafiq,” tells us in Dreams from My Father, that:

“…they [blacks with whom Obama was working] spend half they lives worrying about what white folks think.  Start blaming themselves for the shit they see every day, thinking they can’t do no better till the white man decides they all right.”[i]

The person credited with this statement was reportedly explaining to Obama how he would be dead if not for Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam.

James H. Cone, on whose Black Liberation Theology, Wright’s church was based,  is credited with statements such as:

“While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism.”[i]

But, it is Obama himself who makes perhaps the most revealing and frightening statement of all:

“I wondered whether…a black politics that suppressed rage toward whites generally, or one that failed to elevate race loyalty above all else, was a politics inadequate to the task.”[i]

Apparently, Obama did take away something of Jeremiah Wright and James H. Cone during thos 832+ Sundays he spent listening to Wright’s less offensive sermons.

Reason #44 – Obama and Rezko: A “Distraction!”

Only 130 Days Remaining!

Reason #44

Obama and Rezko – A “Distraction?”

Tony Rezko, now serving time on fraud, money laundering and Attempted Bribery charges,[i] was considered a friend of Obama for 17 years.  Rezko, his partner Daniel Mahru, their wives and businesses contributed more than $50,000 to Obama’s campaigns over the years and Rezko was responsible for bundling millions more, including $14 million in contributions raised by Obama’s U.S. Senate Campaign Finance Committee – a Committee to which Rezko had been appointed by Obama.[ii]

Rezko was also considered a good friend of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and was, according to author Elizabeth Brackett, “the key figure in the wide-ranging corruption that shattered the governor’s office.”[iii]

Although Obama knew Rezko was under criminal investigation at the time, he made sure Rezko was present when he toured his South side Chicago home for the first time, as a prospective buyer.  A few weeks earlier, Rezko had allegedly received a $3.5 million dollar loan from Nadhmi Auchi, a British-Iraqi billionaire convicted in a 2003 corruption case in France. [iv]

The property included a Georgian style home and an adjacent fenced lot that could not be accessed individually from the street.  Although the owner was apparently selling both the home and lot, Mr. Obama successfully negotiated a $300,000 reduction in the price of the home – from $1.95 million to $1.65 million – without purchasing the lot.

On that same day, Mrs. Rita Rezko – Tony Rezko’s wife – made a coincidental full price offer on the adjacent lot, paying $625,000.  Repeating – this lot could not be accessed individually from the street.  In January, 2006, the Obama’s purchased a ten foot section of the lot from Mrs. Rezko, for $104,500,[v]although an appraisal reflected the real value to be only $40,500.[vi]

Obama had first been offered a job by Rezmar – Tony Rezko’s corporation – after his selection as President of the Harvard Law Review.  He refused the offer, but later went to work for the Chicago law firm Davis, Miner Barnhill & Galland – the firm representing Rezmar – the firm that helped Rezmar obtain $43 million in government funding to rehab 15 of its 30 low income apartment buildings.[vii]  The first time Obama was asked about Rezko, he claimed they had just met.  Actually, they had known each other for 17 years.[viii]  This, as Obama likes to say, could represent a “Teachable Moment” – for American voters.

While working for Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, Obama performed an unknown amount of legal work on Rezmar deals.  When questioned about the amount of Obama’s Rezmar work by the Sun-Times, Mr. Miner – a partner in the law firm said “We’ll put together a list of the cases he worked on involving Rezko/Rezmar in the next day or two.”[ix] That statement was  reportedly made on March 13, 2007.  According to the Sun-Time’s Tim Novak, the information had not been received as of April 23, 2007.  Obama’s state senate campaign staff, on the other hand, says he worked only about five hours on such cases over a six year period. But, rehab deals on half of Rezmar’s low income apartment buildings were made while Obama was with the firm. [x] Recall Hillary Clinton’s accusation during one of the debates of the 2008 Democratic Primary, that Obama had handled the legal work for a “Slumlord.”

In February, 1997 Rezmar got away with a $100 fine, after tenants in one building suffered without heat for five weeks beginning in December, 1996.  On January 14, 1997, During a time when Rezko and his partner reportedly couldn’t come up with the money to turn on the building’s heat, Obama received a campaign contribution of $1,000 from Rezmar. [xi]

Eleven of Rezmar’s 30 buildings turned out to be in Obama’s State Senate District.[xii]

Reason #38/39 – Obama: America has Shown Arrogance/Obama’s Respect for Israel Can’t Survive Open Mic

Only 134 Days Remaining!

Reason #38

America has shown Arrogance

Obama had been President for less than four months, when he appeared in Strasbourg, France’s Rhenus Sports Arena, to tell the world that America fails “to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world,” that the United States shares the blame for what has happened in the world, and that there have been times when Americans have “shown arrogance and been dismissive…”  While he spoke also of future shared responsibilities, he laid much of the blame for past problems squarely on the shoulder of America – an interesting charge against one’s own nation – a nation that liberated France from the Nazis and helped restore it to a position of prominence,  largely through the blood of American soldiers and the largesse of the American government and its people.

“…but we also know that there’s something more that has crept into our relationship. In America, there’s a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” (Emphasis added)[i]

Reason #39

Obama’s Respect for Israel Can’t Survive Open Mic

A great deal of speculation has surrounded President Obama’s personal position towards Israel.  Perhaps some clarification was provided at the 2011 G20 conference, when a private exchange between French President Sarkozy and U.S. President Obama was unintentionally exposed through an open microphone.  According to ABC News, the captured conversation went as follows:

President Sarkozy:  “I can’t stand him anymore.  He’s a liar.”

President Obama:  “You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day.”[ii]

How could we doubt President Obama’s sincerity?  Is this the type of duplicity that the President exercises in his dealings with the American people?  Recall his open microphone in San Francisco capturing his comment about voters who “get bitter, and “cling to guns or religion…”[iii]

Perhaps, away from the cameras and microphones, he doesn’t really fly so high above the fray.

Reason #37 – Obama Sees Better America as Election Nears

Only 135 Days Remaining!

Reason #37

Obama Sees Better America as Election Nears

The same President Obama who has so often denigrated, or vilified America, was focused on bringing a different take as he twisted the 2012 State of the Union Address into just another campaign speech.  Particularly striking was his very accurate statement that:

“…anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn’t know what they’re talking about.”[i]

Regrettably, those beautiful and very true words are far from his normal disapproving, apologetic, arrogant and condescending rhetoric.  Here’s a few of his other observations on America’s success and influence:

“…we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass;….”[ii]

“…we’ve lost our ambition, our imagination…”[iii]

“Instead of strategically applying our power and our principles, too often we set those principles aside as luxuries that we could no longer afford.” [iv]

“The way I think about it is, this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft…we need to get back on track.” [v]

“We used to have the best stuff. We used to be the envy of the world. People would come to our countries and they would say, look at — look at the Hoover Dam, look at the Golden Gate Bridge. Now people go to Beijing Airport and they say, I wish we had an airport like that.” [vi]

Funny how things change according to audience and timing.  Should he be re-elected in 2012, I’m sure we’ll hear how he really feels about America.

Reason #33/34 – Obama: Rewriting History/Obama: America has “Gotten a Little Soft”

Only 137 Days Remaining!

Reason #33

Obama: Rewriting History

Speaking before the Cuban American Foundation, then Presidential Candidate Obama once again launched a verbal assault on then President George W. Bush.  Based on Obama’s purported intellect, we can only presume that he knew the first portion of this statement to be  a lie.

“…Since the Bush Administration launched a misguided war in Iraq.  Its policy in the Americas has been negligent towards our friends, ineffective with our adversaries, disinterested in the challenges that matter in the peoples’ lives and incapable of advancing our interests in the region.  No wonder then, that demagogues like Hugo Chavez have stepped into this vacuum.”[i]

“His predictable, yet perilous mix of anti-American rhetoric, authoritarian government, “checkbook diplomacy,” coddling the repressive regime in Cuba, offers the same false promise as the tried and failed ideologies of the past.”[ii]

Hugo Chavez was elected President of Venezuela in 1998.  He “stepped into this vacuum” on Clinton’s – not Bush’s watch!  Here, Obama talks judgmentally about “coddling the repressive regime in Cuba,” when he called for flexibility in dealing with Cuba at the Summit of the Americas.  This might fit the definition of Hypocrisy!

As to the second portion of Obama’s statement, can you tell whether he is speaking about Bush, or Chavez?  Did he know?  Did he care?

Reason #34

Obama:  America has “gotten a little soft”

Apparently, Obama does sometimes consider America to be a decent  country.  On occasion, he has even – as shown in the following quote – called us “Great.”  On September 29, 2011, speaking with Orlando WESH-TV’s Jim Payne, the President noted:

“The way I think about it is, this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades.  We need to get back on track.”[iii]

This is probably one of the nicest things Obama has ever said about America – before, or after becoming President.

Inspirational Words from Barack Obama

“So what has been accomplished here in America is nothing short of remarkable. It’s often been said that America is a country for the future. Well, that future has now arrived. And despite the uncertainties over the last two years, we have stepped onto the world stage as a major financial and economic power.

“We did not arrive at this point by simply chance or good fortune. Our success came because of hard work and the perseverance of the American people, the entrepreneurial spirit of many in this room, and the vision of leaders…”[i]

These were the exciting words of President Barack Obama – a true patriot – a man who believes in American Exceptionalism.

DON’T MISS THIS:

Did he really say all of these nice things about his Country?  Are you kidding?????  Here’s what he really said:

“So what has been accomplished here in Brazil is nothing short of remarkable. It’s often been said that Brazil is a country for the future. Well, that future has now arrived. And despite the uncertainties over the last two years, you have stepped onto the world stage as a major financial and economic power.

“You did not arrive at this point by simply chance or good fortune. Your success came because of hard work and the perseverance of the Brazilian people, the entrepreneurial spirit of many in this room, and the vision of leaders…”[i]

But, just to show he’s thinking about us, here’s four quick statements Obama did make about America and Americans.

“…we’ve lost our ambition, our imagination, ”[ii]

“…the “manic and self absorbed” “mood of the country,” [iii]

“…we went off course…”[iv]

“…great country that had gotten a little soft…”[v]

Obama: Looking Out for Number 1

Shortly after being elected President of the Harvard Law Review, Obama was approached by literary agent Jane Dystel, who suggested he prepare a book proposal for an autobiography. According to author Christopher Andersen, Obama agreed and Dystel took it to several publishers.  Finally, she landed him a book contract with Poseidon Press, a Simon & Schuster company.  Obama was given the almost unheard of first time author advance of $150,000, receiving half in advance.  He was to provide Poseidon with the completed manuscript by 1991.  Time passed and Obama failed to produce.  In 1993, his contract was canceled.  He reportedly went to Simon & Schuster and was able to receive their forgiveness of the $75,000 debt he now owed them.  Despite what could be easily interpreted as a major breach and a large mark against author Obama’s credibility, Dystel was undaunted.  She not only obtained a new contract for Obama with Random House’s Times Book Division , but she also managed to negotiate a new $40,000 Advance.

Following Obama’s 2004 Keynote Address at the Democratic National Convention, the book began to move and Dystel once again attempted to maximize Obama’s profits by obtaining the rights to his book and then finding still another publisher.  Before she could do this however, Random House’s Crown Book Division published it in paperback.  The book went on to sell approximately two million copies and when Obama was elected to the Senate, Crown offered him a two million dollar contract for two books.

In the true spirit of a man who believes in keeping commitments, rewarding loyalty and ensuring fairness for all, Obama reportedly dumped Dystel as his agent and hired an attorney to finalize the deal with Crown.  Why?  Reportedly, to avoid paying Dystel’s longer term commission, in favor of one time hourly legal fees connected with the completion of the new contract.[i]

As the famed Community Organizer, Saul Alinsky said:

“…one’s concern with the ethics of means and ends varies inversely with one’s personal interest in the issue.”[ii]

Reason 5 – A Charmed Life:Obama Glides Into State Senate

157 Days Remaining!

We normally don’t think of a person’s good fortune as a reason not to vote for him or her.  Sometimes, however, the way that good fortune comes leaves serious questions about what a candidate is willing to do in order to chalk one in the “Win” column.  It seems more than appropriate to weigh such tactics, when evaluating the candidacy of someone who, as a boy, was known for yelling “Curang, Curang” (cheater, cheater) and who as a man, blames so much on others.  The question, perhaps:  Is this a politician who lives by the spirit of the law, the letter of the law, or by what moves him most effectively towards his own ends?  Your answer may or may not leave you with a Reason Not to Vote for Barack Obama.  It will certainly leave you with another piece of the puzzle answering: Who is Barack Obama?

Reason #5

A Charmed Life – Obama Glides into State Senate

There can be little doubt that Barack Obama has lived a charmed life.  While apparently not from a particularly wealthy family, he was able to attend Punahou, an elite Hawaiian prep school and then move on to Occidental College in California, followed by Columbia University in New York and finally, after spending time as a Chicago community organizer, to prestigious Harvard Law School, where he was selected first black President of the Harvard Law Review.  After being selected President of the Harvard Law Review, he was given a book contract with Simon & Schuster and an advance of $150,000.[i]

But, in 1995, on top of all this good fortune, Obama was given the gift that has kept on giving.

Popular Illinois State Senator Alice Palmer had decided to run for a seat in the U.S. Congress against Jesse Jackson, Jr.  As a believer in Obama, Palmer encouraged him to run for her seat and endorsed him as her replacement.  When things went bad for her in the Congressional race, her staff contacted Obama, requesting that he withdraw from the race and allow her to recover her old seat.  Obama refused.  Undeterred, Palmer obtained sufficient names on a petition to be placed on the 1996 ballot, running against Obama in the Primary.

According to David Mendell, author of Obama: From Promise to Power, “a volunteer for Obama challenged the legality of her petitions, as well as the legality of petitions from several other candidates.”  All were disqualified and Obama finished the Primary unopposed.  With Republicans not well represented in the contested District, Obama walked across the finish line with an easy win.[ii]

Truly a moment for Democracy – eliminating all of your opponents on a technicality!
